A high (el. 1,905 m or 6,250 ft) mountain pass in the Canadian Rockies, Elk Pass spans the continental divide and connects Kananaskis Country, AB with Elk Lakes Provincial Park, B.C
Both the Kananaskis Valley and the Elk Valley created from a single glaciated trench marking the pass as unusual by its 4 km (2.5 mi) width. The 1916 Alberta/British Columbia Provincial Boundary Surveyors subdivided it into two routes labeled as "West Passage" and "East Passage." later gazetteered as West Elk Pass and East Elk Pass.[1]
The Hike:
Depending on how energetic our group is, this hike can take us 4.9 km to the Elk pass, or beyond to Frozen Lake Trail, and to Frozen Lake itself, just across the B.C. boarder.
Length: 2 - 3 hours each way
Distance: 5-7 km each way
Elevation gain: 210 m / 700 ft m
Difficulty: Level 3 (Intermediate)
Please bring plenty of water, a yoga mat**, sunscreen, snacks, and dress in layers and appropriately for the weather (note that the temperature can drop significantly with higher elevation).
* If the weather permits, the yoga portion will be held where we hike, before we leave the park. If weather does not permit (too cold or raining) we will hold an optional 6 pm yoga class at a studio after returning to Calgary
**Yoga mat is provided, however if you prefer more cushion for your practice, please feel free to bring your favorite mat.
